Definition of naturopathy
Naturopathy is an integrated system of health care based on natural methods and resources. Many of the therapies used in this natural medicine have been used for centuries across the world to improve well being. Before the advent of modern medicine, naturopathy and conventional medicine sometimes made similar use of medicinal herbs, special diets and hydrotherapy to treat patients. According to the World Health Organization, naturopathy should be integrated in the list of conventional health care systems, however this is not the case in many Western countries.
Qualified naturopathy doctors provide diagnosis, treatment and prevention in accordance with the patient's lifestyle. Naturopathy relies on the body's natural healing abilities.
Basis for naturopathy
A naturopathy practioner will spend a lot of time asking the patient questions about their lifestyle to establish a personalised program with the aim of achieving good health. Part of the role of a naturopath is to educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for their health. The focus is on healing the person, not the disease.
The naturopath will help the patient to help himself through appropriate diet, stress management technique and exercise since naturopathy holds that body and mind have a direct impact on the health of an individual. The naturopath will use many natural methods and therapies such as massage; acupressure, herbal medicine, homeopathy to stimulate the body's own healing powers.
Techniques
There are many techniques used in this medical system, below are some of them:
Nutrition and dietary advice
This is one of the key technique of naturopathy. An unbalanced diet prevents the body from functioning properly and a build-up of toxins can lead to illnesses. Good health comes from a balanced diet.
Herbal medicine
Herbs can be used to stimulate the kidneys, intestines and lungs. Their drainage properties have a great impact in the body to restore good health.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy treatments can be used with all patients to treat various health problems.
Hydrotherapy (water therapy)
This natural method has been in use for many centuries. Hot or cold water can be used in many ways to stimulate blood flow, relieve stress and enhance well being.
Physical therapies
Naturopathy relies on several physical therapies such as massage, light therapy, acupressure, bowen therapy, bio-puncture or mechanotherapy. The feeling of well being produced by these natural methods has a positive impact on the body's healing abilities.
Kinesiology
Kinesiology is a healing art that uses muscle testing to detect energy imbalance. The result is be used to choose an appropriate technique to restore equilibrium, and thus to regain good health.
Counselling techniques – stress has a great impact on the immune system and it can hinder the healing process so stress management techniques can be used to deal with emotional issues and well being.
