Dr. Samuel Hahnemann of Germany started in 1790 to look at better ways to treat diseases and restore good health in his patients. He carried out many experiments to establish the Law of Similars using various substances, such as herbs, minerals, animal products and chemicals. He noted that each one triggered different symptoms, and with the help of other physicians he gradually developed homeopathy therapy and started treating patients with success.

The term homeopathy comes from the Greek homois (similar) and pathos (suffering). The basis of homeopathy is that " like cures like" according to the Law of Similars.

The discovery of the smallest effective dilution is again the work of Dr Hahnermann. He found that the more diluted the remedy, the more active it was and the less side-effects remained. The terms C or CH found on homeopathic remedy means that it was prepared according to the technique invented by Dr Hahnemann, the number in front of the letters C or CH indicates the number of dilutions applied, i.e. the potency. Typically, the highest the number, the most diluted the substance. Potency most commonly used nowadays are 6C, 30C and 200C, although homeopaths can prescribe much higher potency.
